Types of Water Treatment Systems
Types of Water Treatment Systems
There are many ways to treat water. Untreated well or surface water is called 'raw water'. Based on laboratory testing, we obtain insight into the values found in the water. Both surface water and well water often contain raised parameters that can cause problems when using this untreated water. In a laboratory, the untreated water is tested on multiple parameters. These parameters provide insight into the water quality. The required water quality after treatment depends on intended use of the water.
The raised parameters and the required water quality partly determine the type of water treatment
The most common water treatment systems are:
- open water treatment
- closed water treatment
- osmosis filtration
- nano filtration
- ion exchangers
- UV filtration
- dosage systems
All the types of water treatment stated above are included in Remon?s range.
When selecting a water treatment system, running costs are also an important factor to take into consideration
- Energy consumption per m3 treated water.
- Maintenance costs.
- Additives to purify the water.
Explanation of types of water treatment systems
Open water treatment
Open water treatment means that the water being treated is in direct contact with oxygen, meaning certain parameters come into contact with oxygen. This triggers the oxidation and degassing process. The water then runs via a filter bed, where the oxidised values like iron and manganese compounds are deposited on the filter material. The type of filter material used has a further effect on the acidity and alkalinity of the water. The most modern open water treatment systems regenerate (flush) the filter bed after saturation.
Remon products used for open water treatment are:
- Remon R710
- Remotector 3000 NT
Closed water treatment
Closed water treatment means the water being treated has no direct contact with oxygen. In some types of treatment, oxygen is used to treat the water. But this is added in a controlled manner, by a compressor, for instance. Many commonly used closed treatment systems use membrane technology. Ion exchangers are also included in the list of 'closed treatment systems'.
Remon products used for closed water treatment are:
- Renomic (Sustainable Water Treatment System)
- RO COSMOS (Osmosis filtration)
- NF COSMOS (Nano filtration)
- Remon Simplex (Ion exchanger)
- Remon Duplex (Ion exchanger)
- Remon Triplex (Ion exchanger)
- Remon Water Softener (domestic/private use)
Renomic
An extremely sustainable new type of water treatment system is made entirely of stainless steel. The biggest advantage of this type of system is that it only requires a single pump for the entire system to remove iron and manganese. This means power consumption per m³ is extremely low. And that results in a guaranteed cost price of no more than 8 eurocent per m³ treated well water! What's more, the water's essential hardness / lime content is retained! Osmosis filtration
Osmosis filtration is a membrane technology that has been used for years in multiple facets and goes further than conventional treatment systems. Think for example of raised parameters like sulphate, sodium, chloride, etc.
The osmosis filter perfectly imitates a natural membrane. Only in this case, the fluids must not contain the same levels of foreign substances. Instead, the entire process is reversed. With reverse osmosis, the water to be treated is guided through the membrane under high pressure. The membrane then filters the unwanted elements (e.g. salt and other substances) from the water. This creates two distinct water flows. On the one hand the 'concentrate water' containing all foreign substances, such as iron, manganese or salt, and on the other hand clean, clear water. After osmosis filtration, the water is often so clean that it is necessary to reapply certain parameters, such as acidity, calcium and magnesium.
Remon products used for osmosis filtration are:
Nano filtration
Nano filtration is a very modern membrane technology. This technology has many similarities to the osmosis filtration described above. The main advantage of this technology is that the water is not too clean after treatment. And that means that no parameters need to be added before the treated water can be used for certain applications, such as drinking water for animal and human consumption. Nano filtration is a water treatment method that Remon uses a lot.
Remon products used for nano filtration are:
Ion exchangers
Ion exchangers are water treatment systems that use a resin filter. In an ion exchanger, small balls of resin exchange the unwanted ions (such as iron, manganese, calcium and magnesium) for other ions, such as sodium. The balls of resin are cleaned during regeneration (flushing) with a regeneration fluid, usually with a high salt concentration. One major advantage of an ion exchanger is that the water is soft directly after treatment. An ion exchanger is driven by just a single pump, so it requires very little energy.
Remon products used for ion exchangers are:
- Remon Simplex
- Remon Duplex
- Remon Triplex
- Remon Water Softener (domestic use)
UV filtration
The name says it all. UV filtration uses a UV lamp. The UV lamp kills the bacteria and organisms in the water as they pass the ultraviolet lamp. The UV lamp is fitted to a cylinder that is built into your mains supply. UV lamps are supplied based on the number of litres per hour of water to be treated. They are available from Remon in all types and sizes.
Dosage systems
Dosage systems are often used once all the water has been treated but certain parameters still need to be handled. Such as the acidity (pH) of the water, for instance. They are also often used to fight bacteria, algae and biofilm. Using a mixing vessel and a dosage pump, the amount of the additive is determined based on the number of litres and/or torque of the pump. Common additives are: chlorine dioxide, chlorine, caustic soda, citric acid, etc. Remon supplies only the most modern dosage equipment. We also provide expert advice about the amount of additive per litre.
